Animals Including Humans Year 3 Science Booklet | KS2 Nutrition, Food Groups, Skeletons, Muscles
Year 3 Animals Including Humans booklet. KS2 Science: nutrition, food groups, balanced diet, skeletons, muscles. UK national curriculum primary science.
The Year 3 Animals Including Humans unit introduces learners to nutrition (food groups and balanced diets) and to the human skeleton and muscles. It's the entry point to Year 4's digestion, Year 6's circulation, and KS3 onwards. This booklet gives learners structured tasks for sorting foods, labelling skeletons, and explaining how muscles work in pairs, so the vocabulary lands the first time.
What's inside:
- Nutrition: the seven food groups (carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, fibre, water) and what each does for the body
- Balanced diet: identifying balanced meals, sorting foods by group, age-appropriate guidance
- Why humans can't make their own food (unlike plants) and need to eat the right kinds in the right amounts
- The human skeleton: major bones (skull, ribs, spine, pelvis, femur, humerus) — labelling and function
- Why animals (including humans) have skeletons: support, protection, movement
- Muscles: how muscles work in pairs (biceps and triceps), contraction, antagonistic pairs at age-appropriate level
- Comparison to other animals: mammals (vertebrate skeleton), insects (exoskeleton), worms (no skeleton)
UK National Curriculum reference: Year 3 Science, Animals Including Humans. Aligned to the statutory requirements: identify that animals, including humans, need the right types and amount of nutrition; identify that humans and some other animals have skeletons and muscles for support, protection and movement.
Who it's for: Year 3 class teachers planning the Animals Including Humans unit, primary science leads, primary science tutors, parents supporting their child's Year 3 science learning, and homeschool families on the UK national curriculum.
