Plants Year 3 Science Booklet | KS2 Plant Parts, Water Transport, Life Cycle, Photosynthesis Introduction
Year 3 Plants booklet. KS2 Science: plant parts and functions, what plants need to grow, water transport, life cycle, pollination. UK national curriculum.
The Year 3 Plants unit is the foundation for every Biology topic that follows. Learners identify and describe the parts of a flowering plant, investigate what plants need to grow, observe water moving through a plant, and follow the life cycle from seed dispersal to germination. This booklet gives learners the structured tasks to record their thinking and lock in the vocabulary that returns in Year 5 Living Things, Year 6 Living Things, and right through to GCSE Biology.
What's inside:
- Parts of a flowering plant and their functions: roots, stem, leaves, flowers, petals, stamen, carpel
- What plants need to grow: light, water, air, nutrients from soil, suitable temperature, room to grow
- Water transport: how water moves from roots through the stem to leaves (the celery and food-colouring experiment)
- The life cycle of a flowering plant: pollination, fertilisation, seed formation, seed dispersal, germination
- Methods of seed dispersal: wind, water, animal, explosion
- Diagrams to label, classification activities, and short writing prompts learners can complete independently
UK National Curriculum reference: Year 3 Science, Plants. Aligned to the statutory requirements: identify and describe the functions of different parts of flowering plants; explore the requirements of plants for life and growth; investigate the way in which water is transported within plants; explore the part that flowers play in the life cycle of flowering plants.
Who it's for: Year 3 class teachers planning the Plants unit, primary science leads, primary science tutors, parents supporting their child's Year 3 science learning, and homeschool families on the UK national curriculum.
