5 Ways to Use Science Vocabulary Labels in Your Primary Classroom

Vocabulary is the gateway to scientific understanding.

Research consistently shows that explicit vocabulary instruction improves comprehension and retention in science. Yet finding time for dedicated vocabulary work can feel impossible with a packed curriculum.

That is where science vocabulary labels come in. These simple display resources work harder than you might think.

1. Build a living word wall

Create a dedicated science vocabulary wall that grows throughout each unit. Add new terms as you introduce them, so learners can see their scientific vocabulary expanding week by week. Position it where learners can easily reference it during lessons and independent work.

Top tip: Involve learners in adding the labels. When a new term comes up, ask a learner to find and add the correct label to the wall.

2. Create topic sorting activities

Print multiple sets and use them for classification activities. Learners can sort terms into categories such as living and non-living, plant parts and animal parts, or by the year group the vocabulary is introduced in. This reinforces meaning and helps learners see connections between scientific ideas.

3. Support SEND learners with visual cues

Place relevant vocabulary labels on tables during practical work. For learners with working memory difficulties or those learning English as an additional language, having key terms visible reduces cognitive load and supports accurate scientific language. Adding images alongside the text gives extra support.

4. Use for retrieval practice

At the start of each lesson, display vocabulary from previous units. Ask learners to explain meanings, use the words in sentences, or link them to what they already know. This spaced retrieval strengthens long-term retention far more effectively than simply re-reading terms.

5. Display in corridors for cross-school consistency

Science leads can use the same vocabulary labels across all year groups to create a shared visual language throughout the school. When learners see familiar terms from Year One through to Year Six, it reinforces the spiral nature of the science curriculum.
