Make the Invisible Visible
🧬 What Is It?
The Banana DNA Extraction Challenge takes the abstract world of cells and genetics and puts it right in front of learners — where they can see, touch, and describe DNA.
They’ll:
- Break down the cells in a banana using household materials.
- Follow a step-by-step scientific method to extract real DNA.
- Observe and describe the DNA they’ve collected.
- Record their process and reflect on their success.
- Make connections between all living things and the molecules they share.
🧠Why It Works
Learners are guided to:
- Understand what DNA is and why it matters.
- Follow a real extraction protocol step-by-step.
- Think carefully about why each ingredient (salt, detergent, alcohol) plays a role.
- Reflect on what worked, what didn’t, and how they might improve next time.
📦 What’s Included (in the full bundle):
- Presentation slides – with key questions, glossary, and visual guidance.
- Method worksheet – scaffolded planning and model example.
- Results table – track visibility, layer separation, and technique.
- Evaluation worksheet – 12-question grid for reasoning and reflection.
- Leaderboard – class-wide comparison to prompt discussion.
- Certificate – to celebrate careful, focused investigation.
All templates are:
- Editable in Canva.
- Provided in black-and-white printable versions.
🖇️ Template links are delivered in a PDF after purchase, so you can save, adapt and reuse easily.
