Chemical Analysis Lessons PowerPoint | AQA GCSE Combined Science Chemistry C8, 5 Lessons
AQA GCSE Combined Science Chemistry C8 Chemical Analysis: 5 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test
This is the Combined Science Trilogy version of C8 Chemical Analysis, matched to the AQA 8464 specification. You get 4 teaching lessons and the 1 required practical as full lessons, all planned and ready to teach in editable PowerPoint.
What your classes work through
- Pure substances and formulations. Pupils compare a melting range of 128°C to 134°C with the sharp 135°C of pure aspirin to judge a student's purity claim.
- Chromatography and Rf values. Pupils link how strongly each dye is attracted to the paper and to the solvent with why the two spots end at different heights.
- Testing for hydrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Pupils spot that the unknown gas relights a glowing splint, identify it as oxygen and fill in its lighted splint result from the table.
- Testing for Chlorine. Pupils account for chlorine bleaching damp litmus while an acidic gas only turns it red, setting the two results out side by side.
The 1 required practical
- RP12 Chromatography. Pupils divide the 4.0 cm travelled by a dye by the 8.0 cm solvent front to give its Rf value.
Who it is for
Use it to teach C8 Chemical Analysis for GCSE Combined Science Trilogy, covering pure substances, formulations, chromatography, Rf values and gas tests for hydrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and chlorine. It also supports Combined Science Chemistry revision in KS4 and includes the chromatography required practical.
How each lesson runs
Each C8 Chemical Analysis lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.
Topic test
The C8 Chemical Analysis topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
