AQA GCSE Combined Science Physics P6 Waves | 7 Lesson Presentations and Topic Test
AQA GCSE Combined Science Physics P6 Waves: 7 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test
This is the Combined Science Trilogy version of P6 Waves, matched to the AQA 8464 specification. You get 5 teaching lessons and the 2 required practicals as full lessons, all planned and ready to teach in editable PowerPoint.
What your classes work through
- Transverse and longitudinal waves. Pupils take the duck's lowest and highest positions and the time between them from a graph to find how fast it rises.
- Amplitude, wavelength, frequency and the wave equation. Pupils use the wave equation with a fixed speed of sound to show why going from 170 Hz to 340 Hz shortens wavelength and period.
- The electromagnetic spectrum. Pupils argue whether being transverse and sharing one speed in a vacuum makes radio waves and gamma rays alike, then conclude.
- Generating electromagnetic waves and their dangers. Pupils add a CT dose of 8 mSv to two 0.02 mSv chest X-rays and 2.7 mSv of background, then express the sum in Sv.
- Uses of electromagnetic waves. Pupils set microwaves for satellites against light or infrared in optical fibres, giving the reason each wave fits its use.
The 2 required practicals
- RP20 Waves. Pupils calculate the speed of waves in a ripple tank from a frequency of 12 Hz and a wavelength of 0.05 m.
- RP21 Infrared Radiation. Pupils judge a student's claim about dark surfaces and colour, drawing on the infrared radiation practical to identify other factors.
Who it is for
Use it to teach P6 Waves in GCSE Combined Science Trilogy, covering transverse and longitudinal waves, the wave equation, the electromagnetic spectrum, radiation dose and uses of electromagnetic waves. It also supports Combined Science Physics revision in KS4 and includes the waves and infrared radiation required practicals.
How each lesson runs
Each P6 Waves lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.
Topic test
The P6 Waves topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
