Working Scientifically Progression Map KS1 KS2 Display: Observing and Measuring

A whole-school progression map and display showing how working scientifically develops from Year 1 to Year 6.

This one focuses on observing and measuring. In Years 1 and 2, children are making careful observations and using simple equipment. By Years 3 and 4, children are taking measurements using standard units. By Years 5 and 6, they are expected to measure more accurately, repeat readings and think about what their results are telling them.

Each panel includes

• the skill explained in language children can understand
• what it might look like in a lesson
• what you would be looking for in a child's work

Put children's work alongside the relevant year group so the display shows the progression in the skill.

The wording follows the statutory working scientifically strands, so it changes between Year 2 and Year 3 where the curriculum changes.
