AQA GCSE Combined Science Biology B1 Cell Biology: 9 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test

This is the Combined Science Trilogy version of B1 Cell Biology, matched to the AQA 8464 specification. You get 7 teaching lessons and the 2 required practicals as full lessons, all planned and ready to teach in editable PowerPoint.

What your classes work through

  • Animal, plant and bacterial cells. Pupils look at which sub-cellular structures a bacterium lacks, such as a nucleus, and use them to justify calling the bacterial cell prokaryotic.
  • Specialised cells and differentiation. Pupils link each sperm cell feature to its job: energy from many mitochondria, swimming with the flagellum and digesting a way into the egg.
  • Microscopy: magnification and resolution. Pupils spot the error in a conclusion that multiplied 30 mm by x300, then divide instead to find the onion cell's true size.
  • Chromosomes, the cell cycle and mitosis. Pupils start from a fruit fly body cell with 8 chromosomes and reason how many end up in each daughter cell after one cycle.
  • Stem cells and their uses. Pupils build a balanced argument on whether doctors should use embryonic stem cells for any serious illness, ending with a supported judgement.
  • Diffusion and exchange surfaces. Pupils work out surface area to volume for agar cubes of different side lengths and pick the one with the fastest diffusion for its size.
  • Osmosis and active transport. Pupils spot where mass change hits zero on a graph of soaked potato pieces and say which sucrose strength matches the cell sap.

The 2 required practicals

  • RP1 Microscopy. Pupils calculate the real width of a cell from its image size and the microscope magnification using real size equals image size divided by magnification.
  • RP2 Osmosis in Plant Tissue. Pupils read a graph of percentage mass change in potato cylinders, describe the pattern across sugar solutions and find where the mass stays the same.

Who it is for

Use it to teach B1 Cell Biology for GCSE Combined Science Trilogy, covering cell structure, specialised cells, microscopy, mitosis, stem cells, diffusion, osmosis and active transport. It also works for Combined Science Biology revision in Year 10 and Year 11, with the microscopy and osmosis required practicals included.

How each lesson runs

Each B1 Cell Biology lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.

Topic test

The B1 Cell Biology topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
