AQA GCSE Combined Science Physics P2 Electricity | 9 Lesson Presentations and Topic Test
AQA GCSE Combined Science Physics P2 Electricity: 9 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test
This is the Combined Science Trilogy version of P2 Electricity, matched to the AQA 8464 specification. You get 7 teaching lessons and the 2 required practicals as full lessons, all planned and ready to teach in editable PowerPoint.
What your classes work through
- Circuits, charge and current. Pupils work out the resistance of a resistor from the charge flowing, the time and the potential difference, then select the correct value.
- Resistors: ohmic and non-ohmic. Pupils explain why a diode lets current flow one way only, linking very high resistance in the reverse direction to almost no current.
- Mains electricity: ac, dc and the three wires. Pupils argue both ways on touching wires inside a switched off appliance, considering what each of the three mains wires does.
- Electrical power. Pupils find the current from 920 W and 230 V, then use P = I²R to get the heater's resistance in ohms.
- Energy transfers in everyday appliances. Pupils work out the energy a kettle and a toaster each transfer from their power and time, then compare the two values.
- The National Grid. Pupils choose the transformer type between an offshore wind farm and the transmission cables, linking higher voltage to less energy wasted.
- Series and parallel circuits. Pupils reason why unscrewing one of two parallel mains lamps leaves the other lit and why each still receives 230 V.
The 2 required practicals
- RP15 Resistance of a Wire. Pupils state how resistance changes as a wire gets longer from a graph, then take a value off it at 60 cm.
- RP16 I-V Characteristics. Pupils explain why a lamp's I-V curve bends as its filament heats up, after recording how its graph differs from an ordinary resistor's straight line.
Who it is for
Use it for AQA GCSE Combined Science Trilogy P2 Electricity lessons on charge, current, resistance, series and parallel circuits, mains electricity, power and the National Grid. It also covers Combined Science Physics revision for KS4 and the resistance and I-V characteristics required practicals.
How each lesson runs
Each P2 Electricity lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.
Topic test
The P2 Electricity topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
