Infection and Response Lessons PowerPoint | AQA GCSE Combined Science Biology B3, 6 Lessons
AQA GCSE Combined Science Biology B3 Infection and Response: 6 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test
This is the Combined Science Trilogy version of B3 Infection and Response, matched to the AQA 8464 specification. You get 6 teaching lessons, all planned and ready to teach in editable PowerPoint.
What your classes work through
- Pathogens and communicable disease. Pupils judge whether a drop from 40 to 25 colds in a month really shows hand washing alone can stop every infection spreading.
- Viral diseases: measles, HIV and TMV. Pupils set measles beside HIV, comparing routes of spread and effects, and show how HIV damages the immune system over time.
- Bacterial, fungal and protist diseases. Pupils identify malaria and its protist cause from a traveller's symptoms and justify one way the infection could have been avoided.
- Defending the body: white blood cells and vaccination. Pupils test a newspaper's claim about protecting unvaccinated babies during a measles outbreak, using the immune system to argue both ways.
- Antibiotics and painkillers. Pupils tick the reason a doctor refuses antibiotics for influenza, recognising that antibiotics cannot kill viruses reproducing inside cells.
- Discovery and development of drugs. Pupils take two readings from a drug trial graph and divide the fall in concentration by the 3 hours between them.
Who it is for
Use it for GCSE Combined Science Trilogy B3 Infection and Response, covering pathogens, viral, bacterial, fungal and protist diseases, white blood cells, vaccination, antibiotics and drug development. It also works for Combined Science Biology revision across KS4 or as cover lessons.
How each lesson runs
Each B3 Infection and Response lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.
Topic test
The B3 Infection and Response topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
