AQA GCSE Chemistry C8 Chemical Analysis: 9 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test

You get every lesson for AQA GCSE Chemistry C8 Chemical Analysis, planned and ready to teach. There are 7 teaching lessons and the 2 required practicals as full lessons. Each one is editable PowerPoint and matched to the AQA 8462 specification.

What your classes work through

  • Pure substances and formulations. Pupils evaluate whether a sample of aspirin that melts between 128°C and 134°C can be pure, comparing it with the sharp melting point of 135°C.
  • Chromatography and Rf values. Pupils explain why two soluble dyes travel to different heights on chromatography paper.
  • Testing for hydrogen, oxygen and carbon dioxide. Pupils use a table of splint tests to predict how an unknown gas affects a lighted splint, then name the gas and justify it.
  • Testing for Chlorine. Pupils compare what damp blue litmus paper shows in chlorine and in an acidic gas and explain why the results differ.
  • Identifying Metal Ions: Flame Tests and Hydroxides. Pupils identify the metal ion that gives a white hydroxide precipitate which dissolves in excess sodium hydroxide.
  • Identifying Carbonates, Halides and Sulfates. Pupils complete a passage explaining why acid must be added before barium chloride for a sulfate test result to be trusted.
  • Instrumental methods and flame emission spectroscopy. Pupils justify choosing flame emission spectroscopy over a flame test when a forensic lab has only a tiny sample of a metal salt.

The 2 required practicals

  • RP6 Chromatography. Pupils calculate the Rf value of a dye from the distance it moved and the distance moved by the solvent front.
  • RP7 Identifying Ions. Pupils fill the gaps to identify an unknown salt from its lilac flame and the white precipitate it forms with silver nitrate.

Who it is for

Use it to teach AQA GCSE Chemistry Chemical Analysis lessons in Year 10 and Year 11 on purity, formulations, chromatography, gas tests, flame tests and tests for ions. It also covers the chromatography and identifying ions required practicals for GCSE Chemistry revision.

How each lesson runs

Each C8 Chemical Analysis lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.

Topic test

The C8 Chemical Analysis topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
