AQA GCSE Combined Science Chemistry C3 Quantitative Chemistry: 5 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test

This is the Combined Science Trilogy version of C3 Quantitative Chemistry, matched to the AQA 8464 specification. You get 5 teaching lessons, all planned and ready to teach in editable PowerPoint.

What your classes work through

  • Conservation of mass and relative formula mass. Pupils work out the Mr of each substance in 2H2 + O2 forming 2H2O to show the total mass is the same on both sides.
  • Mass changes and chemical measurements. Pupils average four magnesium oxide masses, then take half the range to state the result with an uncertainty.
  • Moles and molar mass. Pupils divide each 12 g sample by its relative atomic mass to find moles and decide whether carbon or magnesium holds more atoms.
  • Calculating masses from balanced equations. Pupils use the graph for 2Mg + O2 forming 2MgO to take a reading at 30 g and find the gradient between two points.
  • Limiting reactants and concentration of solutions. Pupils identify magnesium as the limiting reactant once extra hydrochloric acid stops producing hydrogen, and explain why.

Who it is for

Use it for AQA GCSE Combined Science Trilogy C3 Quantitative Chemistry lessons on conservation of mass, relative formula mass, uncertainty, moles, reacting masses, limiting reactants and concentration. It also works as Combined Science Chemistry revision or intervention for Year 10 and Year 11.

How each lesson runs

Each C3 Quantitative Chemistry lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.

Topic test

The C3 Quantitative Chemistry topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
