AQA GCSE Combined Science Chemistry C6 Rate and Extent of Chemical Change: 9 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test

This is the Combined Science Trilogy version of C6 Rate and Extent of Chemical Change, matched to the AQA 8464 specification. You get 7 teaching lessons and the 2 required practicals as full lessons, all planned and ready to teach in editable PowerPoint.

What your classes work through

  • Calculating the Rate of a Reaction. Pupils subtract 48 cm³ from 84 cm³ and divide by 40 s to find the mean rate between two readings.
  • What Changes the Rate of a Reaction. Pupils link more frequent collisions to the faster reaction in stronger acid, and the fixed mass of magnesium to the same final gas volume.
  • Catalysts. Pupils describe how a catalyst gives an alternative pathway with lower activation energy, so more collisions succeed each second.
  • Reversible reactions and equilibrium. Pupils challenge the view that a reversible reaction stops at equilibrium, explaining that the forward and reverse rates become equal.
  • Le Chatelier's Principle and changing concentration. Pupils use the nitrogen and hydrogen equilibrium to show why taking ammonia away shifts the position right and raises the overall yield.
  • The effect of temperature on equilibrium. Pupils extend a yield trend from 200 °C to 500 °C to estimate 600 °C, then use it to classify the forward reaction.
  • The effect of pressure on equilibrium. Pupils count gas molecules on each side of two equilibria to explain why extra pressure helps ammonia yield but leaves hydrogen iodide unchanged.

The 2 required practicals

  • RP11 Rates of Reaction 1. Pupils work out 1 divided by 16 seconds to give the rate when the cross vanished at 40 g/dm³.
  • RP11 Rates of Reaction 2. Pupils take the gas volume at 20 seconds from the graph and divide by the time to get the mean rate.

Who it is for

Use it for GCSE Combined Science Trilogy C6 Rate and Extent of Chemical Change: measuring and calculating rates, collision theory, catalysts, reversible reactions, equilibrium and Le Chatelier's Principle. It is set up for Combined Science Chemistry revision in Year 10 and Year 11 and covers the rates of reaction required practical.

How each lesson runs

Each C6 Rate and Extent of Chemical Change lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.

Topic test

The C6 Rate and Extent of Chemical Change topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
