AQA GCSE Biology B2 Organisation: 12 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test

You get every lesson for AQA GCSE Biology B2 Organisation, planned and ready to teach. There are 10 teaching lessons and the 2 required practicals as full lessons. Each one is editable PowerPoint and matched to the AQA 8461 specification.

What your classes work through

  • The human digestive system. Pupils complete a reasoning passage explaining how temperature changes the rate of a small intestine enzyme, including what happens to its active site above 37 °C.
  • The heart, lungs and blood vessels. Pupils describe three features of the alveoli and explain how each one speeds up gas exchange in the lungs.
  • Blood and its components. Pupils explain why body cells receive too little oxygen when a patient has lost a large volume of blood and has a very low red blood cell count.
  • Coronary heart disease and treating the heart. Pupils evaluate a conclusion drawn from a statin trial with a dummy pill group, judging whether the data prove statins should replace stents.
  • Health and disease. Pupils compare how measles and coronary heart disease arise and spread, and explain why only a communicable disease passes between people.
  • Lifestyle and non-communicable disease. Pupils match smoking, obesity, excess alcohol, and poor diet with lack of exercise to the non-communicable disease each one most raises the risk of.
  • Cancer. Pupils use a table of lung cancer cases against cigarettes smoked per day to predict the figure for 40 a day and justify it from the pattern.
  • Plant tissues and the leaf. Pupils describe where the palisade mesophyll is found in a leaf and explain how its position helps the leaf photosynthesise efficiently.
  • Transport in plants: transpiration and translocation. Pupils explain why a plant wilts on a hot, windy day even though the soil around its roots is still moist.
  • Levels of organisation. Pupils describe the levels of organisation from a single cell up to the whole organism, using the digestive system as their worked example.

The 2 required practicals

  • RP4 Food Tests. Pupils link the Benedict's, iodine, Biuret and ethanol tests to the colour change or cloudy white layer that shows a positive result.
  • RP5 Effect of pH on Enzymes. Pupils predict a missing time for amylase to break down starch from a table of pH results and explain their prediction.

Who it is for

Use it for AQA GCSE Biology Organisation lessons covering digestion and enzymes, the heart and lungs, blood, coronary heart disease, cancer, and plant tissues and transpiration in Year 10 and Year 11. It works for GCSE Biology revision too and includes the food tests and pH and enzymes required practicals.

How each lesson runs

Each B2 Organisation lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.

Topic test

The B2 Organisation topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
