AQA GCSE Biology B4 Bioenergetics: 7 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test

You get every lesson for AQA GCSE Biology B4 Bioenergetics, planned and ready to teach. There are 6 teaching lessons and the 1 required practical as full lessons. Each one is editable PowerPoint and matched to the AQA 8461 specification.

What your classes work through

  • The photosynthesis reaction. Pupils use a table to compare the photosynthesis reaction in bright light and in darkness, then explain the difference in terms of energy.
  • Rate of photosynthesis and limiting factors. Pupils match limiting factor, increasing light intensity and amount of chlorophyll to the statement that correctly describes each term.
  • Uses of glucose from photosynthesis. Pupils predict the mass of starch stored in a leaf after 8 hours of light from a results table and justify their prediction.
  • Aerobic and anaerobic respiration. Pupils describe how much energy aerobic and anaerobic respiration each transfer from glucose and explain why the amounts differ.
  • Response to exercise. Pupils explain why a runner's leg muscles ache and become fatigued during an all-out 400 m sprint.
  • Metabolism. Pupils assess a gym user's claim that all the extra protein they eat will be stored as muscle, applying what they know about metabolism.

The 1 required practical

  • RP6 Light Intensity and Photosynthesis. Pupils calculate the rate of photosynthesis in pondweed from a count of 84 oxygen bubbles in 3 minutes.

Who it is for

Use it to teach AQA GCSE Biology Bioenergetics lessons on photosynthesis, limiting factors, uses of glucose, aerobic and anaerobic respiration, exercise and metabolism to Year 10 and Year 11. It also supports GCSE Biology revision and covers the light intensity and photosynthesis required practical.

How each lesson runs

Each B4 Bioenergetics lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.

Topic test

The B4 Bioenergetics topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
