Cell Biology Lessons PowerPoint | AQA GCSE Biology B1 8461, 11 Lessons
AQA GCSE Biology B1 Cell Biology: 11 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test
You get every lesson for AQA GCSE Biology B1 Cell Biology, planned and ready to teach. There are 8 teaching lessons and the 3 required practicals as full lessons. Each one is editable PowerPoint and matched to the AQA 8461 specification.
What your classes work through
- Animal, plant and bacterial cells. Pupils compare an animal cell with a bacterial cell under the same microscope, describe two structural differences and explain why the bacterium is classed as prokaryotic.
- Specialised cells and differentiation. Pupils explain how the mitochondria, tail and enzyme-filled acrosome of a sperm cell help it reach and fertilise an egg cell.
- Microscopy: magnification and resolution. Pupils evaluate a student's incorrect magnification calculation for an onion cell and work out the correct real width themselves.
- Culturing microorganisms and aseptic technique. Pupils complete a table comparing bacterial incubation at 25 °C and 37 °C, then explain why school laboratories must use the lower temperature.
- Chromosomes, the cell cycle and mitosis. Pupils predict how many chromosomes each new fruit fly cell will contain after mitosis and justify their prediction.
- Stem cells and their uses. Pupils write a 6-mark evaluation of using embryonic stem cells to treat illnesses such as paralysis and diabetes, weighing both sides and reaching a justified conclusion.
- Diffusion and exchange surfaces. Pupils decide which of four agar cubes a substance diffuses into fastest for its size, using surface area to volume ratio.
- Osmosis and active transport. Pupils read a potato cylinder graph to find the sucrose concentration with no net water movement, then calculate the gradient of the line.
The 3 required practicals
- RP1 Microscopy. Pupils use real size = image size ÷ magnification to calculate the real width of a cell from its image.
- RP2 Culturing Microorganisms. Pupils explain how a student made sure that only the bacteria being tested grew on an agar plate used to test two antibiotics.
- RP3 Osmosis in Plant Tissue. Pupils describe the pattern in a graph of potato mass change in sugar solutions and read off the concentration giving no change in mass.
Who it is for
Use it to teach AQA GCSE Biology Cell Biology lessons from scratch, or for GCSE Biology revision on cells, microscopy, mitosis, stem cells, diffusion and osmosis in Year 10 and Year 11. It also covers the microscopy, culturing microorganisms and osmosis required practicals.
How each lesson runs
Each B1 Cell Biology lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.
Topic test
The B1 Cell Biology topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
