What your classes work through
- Crude oil, hydrocarbons and alkanes. Pupils apply CnH2n+2 to an alkane holding 16 hydrogen atoms and tick the one option with seven carbons.
- Fractional distillation and petrochemicals. Pupils fill a passage showing how the column cools with height, so large molecules with high boiling points condense low down.
- The properties and combustion of hydrocarbons. Pupils evaluate the claim that larger hydrocarbons make the best petrol engine fuels, using what they know about hydrocarbon properties.
- Cracking hydrocarbons to make alkenes. Pupils subtract the carbons in hexane from those in dodecane and divide by two to find how much ethene forms.
