What your classes work through

  • Pathogens and communicable disease. Pupils evaluate a classmate's claim that a fall in reported colds proves hand washing prevents all communicable diseases.
  • Viral diseases: measles, HIV and TMV. Pupils compare how measles and HIV spread and affect the body, then explain why HIV can leave a person unable to fight other infections.
  • Bacterial, fungal and protist diseases. Pupils name the disease and pathogen type behind a traveller's recurring fever after mosquito bites, then predict and justify one preventive measure.
  • Defending the body: white blood cells and vaccination. Pupils write a 6-mark evaluation of a newspaper claim that vaccinating enough people in a town protects babies too young for the measles vaccine.
  • Antibiotics and painkillers. Pupils choose the statement that best explains why an antibiotic will not cure a patient with influenza, a viral infection.
  • Discovery and development of drugs. Pupils read a clinical trial graph of drug concentration in the blood and determine the rate of decrease between 2 and 5 hours.
  • Producing monoclonal antibodies. Pupils complete a reasoning passage on why mouse lymphocytes are fused with tumour cells and why the resulting hybridoma is cloned.
  • Uses of monoclonal antibodies. Pupils describe how a monoclonal antibody pregnancy test gives a positive result and explain why no coloured line appears when a woman is not pregnant.
  • Detecting and identifying plant diseases. Pupils explain why crops grown in soil low in nitrate and magnesium ions are much smaller than normal and have yellow leaves.
  • Plant defence responses. Pupils judge whether a student is right to conclude that thorns are the only way plants defend themselves against animals.

Who it is for

Use it for AQA GCSE Biology Infection and Response lessons on pathogens, viral, bacterial, fungal and protist diseases, vaccination, antibiotics, drug development, monoclonal antibodies and plant diseases. It suits Year 10 and Year 11 teaching as well as GCSE Biology revision.

How each lesson runs

Each B3 Infection and Response lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.

Topic test

The B3 Infection and Response topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
