AQA GCSE Chemistry C3 Quantitative Chemistry: 8 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test

You get every lesson for AQA GCSE Chemistry C3 Quantitative Chemistry, planned and ready to teach. There are 8 teaching lessons. Each one is editable PowerPoint and matched to the AQA 8462 specification.

What your classes work through

  • Conservation of mass and relative formula mass. Pupils evaluate a claim that mass is lost when hydrogen and oxygen form water, using conservation of mass and relative formula masses.
  • Mass changes and chemical measurements. Pupils calculate the mean mass of magnesium oxide from four repeat readings and the uncertainty as plus or minus half the range.
  • Moles and molar mass. Pupils predict whether 12 g of carbon or 12 g of magnesium contains more atoms and back the prediction up with a calculation.
  • Calculating masses from balanced equations. Pupils read the mass of magnesium oxide formed from a graph, then calculate the gradient of the line and state what it represents.
  • Limiting reactants and concentration of solutions. Pupils explain why adding more hydrochloric acid to a fixed mass of magnesium eventually gives no extra hydrogen gas.
  • Percentage yield. Pupils describe what percentage yield means and give two reasons why it often falls below 100% even though no atoms are lost.
  • Atom economy. Pupils balance the equation for making iron from iron(III) oxide and carbon monoxide as the first step towards an atom economy calculation.
  • Volumes of gases. Pupils calculate the volume of 0.25 moles of carbon dioxide at room temperature and pressure and give the unit.

Who it is for

Use it to teach AQA GCSE Chemistry Quantitative Chemistry lessons in Year 10 and Year 11, covering conservation of mass, moles, reacting masses, limiting reactants, percentage yield, atom economy and gas volumes. It is a strong fit for GCSE Chemistry revision or intervention on chemical calculations.

How each lesson runs

Each C3 Quantitative Chemistry lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.

Topic test

The C3 Quantitative Chemistry topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
