AQA GCSE Combined Science Biology B7 Ecology: 9 lessons ready to teach, with a topic test

This is the Combined Science Trilogy version of B7 Ecology, matched to the AQA 8464 specification. You get 8 teaching lessons and the 1 required practical as full lessons, all planned and ready to teach in editable PowerPoint.

What your classes work through

  • Communities, competition and interdependence. Pupils name the resources that two neighbouring woodland plants fight over and show how the taller one shades out its rival.
  • Abiotic and biotic factors. Pupils link less light reaching shaded pond water to fewer water plants, less oxygen and a falling fish population.
  • Adaptations and extremophiles. Pupils sort a camel's features into structural, behavioural and functional adaptations to judge a student's claim that all three are structural.
  • Food chains, predators, prey and sampling. Pupils decide whether a quadrat or a transect answers each of an ecologist's two questions about daisies and wetter ground by a pond.
  • Cycling materials: carbon and water. Pupils reason that burning felled trees releases stored carbon and ends their photosynthesis, then predict the effect on atmospheric carbon dioxide.
  • Biodiversity and the waste we produce. Pupils tick the reason a stretch of river below a factory holds far fewer species, rejecting the idea that warm water draws them in.
  • Land use, deforestation and global warming. Pupils take two values 20 years apart from a carbon dioxide graph and show working to find the average yearly rise.
  • Maintaining biodiversity. Pupils write full reasons into a passage about captive breeding of endangered animals and protecting rare habitats by law.

The 1 required practical

  • RP7 Field Investigations. Pupils find the mean number of daisies per square metre from ten quadrats and scale it up to the whole field.

Who it is for

Use it for AQA GCSE Combined Science Trilogy B7 Ecology lessons on communities, abiotic and biotic factors, adaptations, sampling, the carbon and water cycles, biodiversity and global warming. It also supports Combined Science Biology revision in Year 10 and Year 11 and includes the field investigations required practical.

How each lesson runs

Each B7 Ecology lesson starts with a Do Now that recalls earlier learning, with the answers on the next slide. It then moves through I Do, We Do and You Do, with a model answer after each task. It finishes with the AQA-style question listed above, its mark scheme and an exit ticket. A specification slide names the AQA points the lesson covers, so you can check it against your scheme of work.

Topic test

The B7 Ecology topic test covers the whole unit with AQA-style questions and comes with its mark scheme, both in Word and PDF.
